![]() ![]() Alternatively, readers won’t fail to note that this small book, illustrated with gentle soy-ink drawings and featuring an adult-child bear duo engaged in various sedentary and lively pursuits, could just as easily be about human parent- (or grandparent-) child pairs: some of the softly colored illustrations depict scenarios that are more likely to occur within a home and/or other family-oriented setting. However, the voice could equally be that of an adult, because who can’t look back upon teachers or other early mentors who gave of themselves and offered their pupils so much? Indeed, some of the self-aware, self-assured expressions herein seem perhaps more realistic as uttered from one who’s already grown. ![]() This gentle ode to a teacher’s skill at inspiring, encouraging, and being a role model is spoken, presumably, from a child’s viewpoint. A paean to teachers and their surrogates everywhere. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() My reaction to the death of Williams reminded me of my reaction when I first read about Iris Chang, another genius who is the subject of this book and who also succumbed to a suicide that was shocking and unfathomable. I had heard of her only in passing, as someone who wrote international bestsellers and was surely an ancient historian. It turns out she was not an ancient historian, but actually a celebrated author, publishing The Rape of Nanking : the Forgotten Holocaust of World War II at age 29. She was happily married, with a very supportive family and a young son. This book review is many months in the making and was scheduled to be published this week when the sad news about Robin Williams broke. ![]() ![]() ![]() So, when I read about her eating disorder, I couldn't help but empathise with her, because I know what it's like to be at the complete mercy of your own brain. I, myself, am clinically diagnosed with anxiety. There were dozens of meetings behind closed doors, romantic letters exchanged, phone calls had, all to knowledge of the tortured Lady Diana who had no other option but to sit idly by and allow this to go on. I felt the sadness, frustration, anger, resentment, and all other feelings that Diana felt as she watched her husband carry on an affair with Parker-Bowles during their marriage. I always thought Parker-Bowles was introduced into the love triangle much later. I was horrified to hear just how involved Camilla Parker-Bowles was from the very beginning. I learned so much about how it began, how it evolved, and how it ended. Or, if I knew it, I didn't know the extent to which it affected her life. There is so much about this woman that I did not know. ![]() It is also fitting that I read it during the summer that is the 20th anniversary of her death. ![]() It just so happens that I was recently in St John's and stopped to browse a local used bookshop, inside which I found a pristine copy of the book. Ever since I heard of this I've wanted to read it. This is easily the best biography I've ever read. ![]() ![]() ![]() Your Voice In My Head is largely devoted to exploring Forrest’s relationship and breakup with GH, and can be heavy handed at certain points. Once I was back in New York and safely in the company of my Internet connection, I was surprised to find that the tender, eccentric GH that Forrest spends much of the book pining for was actually bad boy actor Colin Farrell. Couple this with the fact that I read Your Voice In My Head while on a plane, and I was lucky to have the rare experience of reading a book with a secret, but not being able to snap my fingers and immediately have Google solve the mystery for me. Forrest’s take on mental illness, loss and general malaise has a distinct and mostly pleasant taste embittered only by her obsessive fixation on her movie star ex-boyfriend, forever referred to as “GH.”įorrest’s GH (short for Gypsy Husband) remains anonymous throughout the memoir, and since I came into this not having read any of her prior work, I knew very little about her personal life. Beginning with The Bell Jar, I find books of this kind to feel as if they come from the same family-the way you know a peach, a plum and a nectarine are related somehow, but relish their differing flavors all the same. After my brief obsession with Elizabeth Wurtzel’s Prozac Nation as a teen, I just can’t take any more chances. ![]() I read Emma Forrest’s memoir, Your Voice In My Head, with the slight mistrust I award any Broken Young Woman memoir. ![]() ![]() In the vein of Helen Hoang’s The Heart Principle from last year, this novel reminds us that messy grief and complex love can be two sides of the same coin. Emezi takes us on the literal and emotional journey of Feyi Adekola, a woman still reeling from the tragic death of her husband, Jonah. And yet, You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty transcends the shallow tide pools of a typical entry in the genre and dives into deeper, perhaps more treacherous, waters. ![]() Akwaeke Emezi’s latest novel appears to be a natural fit for such a category: a fun, flirty romance set on an unnamed tropical island. ![]() “Beach read” as a book descriptor feels ubiquitous these days, especially as warm summer months descend upon us, practically begging for trips to far-flung tropics (though many of us remain glued to our work laptops). ![]() ![]() ![]() Arguably, studying warfare is more important for military professionals than studying war. Much of the literature on Alamein is in this area. 2 War is strategic, it asks ‘why’ battles are fought. Using a modern academic view, Jim Storr notes that there is a distinction between studying war and warfare. Since then, the battle and the wider campaign has been studied extensively with an average of one book being published about it every three months since 1945. After Alamein, we never had a defeat” helping embed the battle in popular imagination. Speaking of the victory Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously declared “before Alamein we never had a victory. The battle saw the Allied Eighth Army commanded by General Montgomery breach an obstacle belt and defeat their opponents in the desert. The second battle of El Alamein took place over 23 October to 4 November 1942. ![]() ![]() ![]() But despite any admiration for the story's intentions and its interesting nods to Greek mythology, the Lightning Thief is ultimately mediocre. Its release date was clearly timed to plug the gap between Potter films, giving teenage fantasy fans something to snack on in between meals. At the time of its release, the Harry Potter series was winding down, with Deathly Hallows Part I in production and Part II not being far behind. ![]() ![]() We find ourselves in a similar situation with Percy Jackson. Crucially, while the quality of these films varies, none of them quite come close to the series that blazed the trail. The fantasy genre has been rife with this in recent years, with the huge success of The Lord of the Rings prompting new adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia as well as smaller works like Stardust and Eragon. Once a film franchise has established itself, other similar franchises often follow it, haging on the coattails of its success and trying to cash in by appealing to the same audience. Rating: PG (Mild Language|Action/Violence|Peril|Some Scary Images|Suggestive Material) At a training ground for the children of deities, Percy learns to harness his divine powers and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime: he must prevent a feud among the Olympians from erupting into a devastating war on Earth, and rescue his mother from the clutches of Hades, god of the underworld. Always trouble-prone, the life of teenager Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) gets a lot more complicated when he learns he's the son of the Greek god Poseidon. ![]() ![]() Praise for The Clockwork Scarab "With its fog-shrouded setting, its heart-racing and clever plot and, most of all, its two completely delightful, kick-butt heroines, The Clockwork. If you feel on the fence about dealing with hefty material without wanting to make much of an effort (parts of this may require re-reading in order to really get a grip of it) then I might suggest trying a different book. You'll discover how Thor got his hammer and how Odin lost his eye, the terrible price of binding the wolf Fenrir and why Loki the Trickster can never. It is the type of book where I could tell beforehand that it would be difficult in places to put certain parts together - at least for a while - but I have read similar books so I felt like I could deal with it and I could. The Penguin Book of the Norse Myths compellingly retells these stories for the modern reader, taking us from the creation of the world through the building of Asgard's Wall to the end in Ragnarok. On their own a lot of these myths can be very difficult to understand, but this book comes with not only a pretty decent introduction to the myths and their background, but also a note section at the end of the book for each myth to give a little bit of further information on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() I was looking for a book regarding Norse mythology for a while but only decided to get one recently, and this book is a good example of why I often prefer going for Penguin versions of books rather than others. ![]() |
